EXERCISE

Week 1 - Lost In Random Current Game Sketches (Value)

During the first week, we are to choose a theme, aka a game, to use for our project. I have chosen Lost in Random. Then I drew some existing game environment designs to study their compositions, depth, and style.

Week 2 - Perspectives

For this week's exercise, I just drew perspectives for both Digital Matte Painting and this module.

Week 3: Simple Shapes & Value Painting

This week, Mr. Kannan gave us an in-class activity where we were asked to draw any building starting from a simple shape, focusing on observing and capturing its perspective. I began by placing the basic shape and gradually built up the sketch by adding details to it.

Mr. Kannan also demonstrated how to do simple value painting. I sketched out the house, added some values to define the lighting and depth, and then applied colors on top of it.

Week 4: Structure Sketching & Value Painting

I have explained the process of the structural design in Project 1.

Week 5: Value Composition Studies

I created some rough sketches to determine which composition best suits the sloped hill and hotel building.

Week 6: Value Sketches & Ambience Studies

To make progress, I chose composition number 5 and created two additional value sketches with a bit more detail to help me further visualize my ideas.

After I sketched my second composition, I realized that it can communicate as the two side buildings kind of lead the focal point to the middle, where I was going to place my main building. Then I picked the second composition and did my ambiance study.

REFLECTION

For the exercise, I learned to draw perspectives from different points, but sometimes my perspective was still off. There's definitely room for improvement in this area. Since we were working on both the exercise and Project 1 simultaneously, I ended up spending most of my time on Project 1 and neglected the exercises a bit. Although we were given the option to combine this module with Game Art, I decided to keep them separate to create a wider portfolio. However, I think this decision made things a bit more challenging, as I’m juggling five modules this semester, which has felt overwhelming at times.
