Group Task - Types of Infographics

Figure 1.1 Types of Infographics  - Week 1 (10/2/2024)

Individual Task

In this task we are to pick one free online infographic tool and re-design one poorly constructed infographic poster through your own experimentation with the selected tool.

Figure 1.2.1 Infographic Poster Picked  - Week 1 (6/2/2024)

In order to create a better version of the poster, I have planned out the following steps:
  • Identify the problem with the current poster
  • Define the objectives for the redesign
  • Identify the important data, plan the layout
  • Design the redesigned infographic

1. Problem Identified:

Based on the current poster, I think the background is too dark for a prize-winning poster, as it should be attractive. The photos used are also barely visible and should be more prominent. Additionally, I believe the prize should be enlarged to immediately catch the viewer's attention. Currently, the viewers have to read the entire poster to understand what the prize is. Moreover, I suggest better arrangement of the subtitles, as I found myself only reading the subtitles rather than the content.

2. Objectives:

  • Improve the background color for better aesthetics.
  • Enhance the graphics to make them more vibrant and engaging.
  • Increase the contrast between the font color and the background for improved readability.
  • Make the prize section more visually appealing to draw attention effectively.

3. Important Data:

  • Hole-in-one odds: Typical odds in a PGA tournament are 4.5 to 1.
  • Lightning strike: Weather's second deadliest killer after floods. A park ranger in Virginia got struck seven times.
  • Lottery win: The biggest lottery payout in the U.S. was $365 million in 2006. The higher the jackpot, the worse your odds get.
  • Shark attack: Rare occurrence. In the U.S., less than 50 people have been killed in the last 339 years. Dolphins have been known to defend shark victims.
  • iPad giveaway: Odds of winning an iPad from ASPE are less than 1 in 900.

4. Redesign:

I use Canva to do this task as it was instructed by the lecturer. Canva is also an easy platform for creating infographic poster.

The redesigned poster now feels better to read and look at as it appears more lively. I've changed the background to a lighter gradient color and made the font color dark blue for readability. I've also utilized graphic elements in Canva for each subtitle.
