PROJECT 2B : POSTER DESIGN

1. Research
To start my research, I will first review the project requirements. My project aims to use art to promote sustainable development and address 12 specific SDG goals while aligning them with Maybank TIGER core values. I have conducted research and created a mind map based on my findings.

Figure 4.1 MyTIGER Core Values - Week 8 (24/4/2023)

Figure 2.2 12 SDG Goals - Week 8 (24/5/2023)

I have chose my SDG Goal 14 (Life Below Water), therefore I did deeper research.

Figure 2.3 Life Below Water

Malaysia Goal Target:
  • By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution
  • By 2020, sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems to avoid significant adverse impacts, including by strengthening their resilience, and take action for their restoration in order to achieve healthy and productive oceans
  • Minimize and address the impacts of ocean acidification, including through enhanced scientific cooperation at all levels
  • By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices and implement science-based management plans, in order to restore fish stocks in the shortest time feasible, at least to levels that can produce maximum sustainable yield as determined by their biological characteristics
  • By 2020, conserve at least 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, consistent with national and international law and based on the best available scientific information
  • By 2020, prohibit certain forms of fisheries subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing, eliminate subsidies that contribute to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and refrain from introducing new such subsidies, recognizing that appropriate and effective special and differential treatment for developing and least developed countries should be an integral part of the World Trade Organization fisheries subsidies negotiation
  • By 2030, increase the economic benefits to Small Island developing States and least developed countries from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism
  • Increase scientific knowledge, develop research capacity and transfer marine technology, taking into account the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Criteria and Guidelines on the Transfer of Marine Technology, in order to improve ocean health and to enhance the contribution of marine biodiversity to the development of developing countries, in particular small island developing States and least developed countries
  • Provide access for small-scale artisanal fishers to marine resources and markets
  • Enhance the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources by implementing international law as reflected in UNCLOS, which provides the legal framework for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources, as recalled in paragraph 158 of The Future We Want.
Case Study

Figure 2.4 Case Study 1

The "Ocean Plastic Pollution" poster, created as the final university project for an illustration course, aims to report the impact of human activities on the ocean. Its purpose is to raise awareness among the target audience, Generation Y (millennials), and discourage them from repeating the mistakes of past generations in regard to plastic abuse. The poster was created for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), an organization dedicated to conservation and environmental protection.

Figure 2.5 Case Study 2

"Planet or Plastic" campaign by National Geographic utilizes visual communication to educate and inspire individuals to rethink their plastic consumption habits and work towards a cleaner and healthier planet. It aims to mobilize collective action and raise awareness about the pressing issue of plastic pollution, with the goal of reducing single-use plastics and protecting the environment for future generations.

Figure 2.6 Case Study 3

The poster design for the Surfrider Foundation's "The Branch" campaign features a visually impactful and thought-provoking composition. The main focus of the design is a branch floating in the sea with waste stuck to it, symbolizing the accumulation of single-use plastic in nature. The catchphrase, "Your delivery has arrived," draws parallels with home delivery applications, but instead of something appetizing, it reveals the reality of waste ending up in the ocean.

The poster effectively combines visual elements and textual information to convey the message. The body copy emphasizes that 36% of plastic waste is food waste, highlighting the connection between food consumption, packaging, and waste pollution. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about the ecological emergency caused by the increase in single-use waste, particularly driven by the rise in take-out catering and home delivery.

Mood board

Figure 2.7 Mood Board

I have created a mood board that includes the style of the poster, inspiration, the message I want to convey, and the color scheme to visually gather and organize your ideas, inspirations, and preferences for my poster design.

Summary

I have selected "Life Below Water" as the theme for my poster design project. Inspired by Maybank's logo, which features a tiger, I aim to create a visually compelling poster that addresses the issue of trash in our oceans. By combining the majestic presence of the tiger with underwater elements and symbols of pollution, the poster will serve as a powerful visual metaphor. It seeks to draw attention to the detrimental impact of trash on marine ecosystems and emphasizes the need for collective action to preserve our underwater world. Through an impactful composition and thought-provoking imagery, the poster will raise awareness, inspire viewers to reflect on their consumption habits, and encourage them to take steps towards reducing waste and protecting marine life.

2. Sketch

Attempt 1

Figure 3.1 Sketch 1 - Week 8 (26/5/2023)

In my first attempt, I imagine a strong image showing a tiger in the sea, desperately trying to escape from a shark made of trash. This picture represents a plea to avoid pollution and its harmful effects on the ocean's ecosystems. The tiger is shown as a helpless victim of pollution caused by humans. It is surrounded by floating garbage and the remnants of dead fish and bones, creating a distressing scene. The trash is sinking beneath the seabed. The artwork aims to raise awareness about the importance of fighting against pollution in our oceans.

Attempt 2

Figure 3.2 Sketch 2 - Week 8 (26/5/2023)

For my second attempt, I would like to create a double exposure using an image of a tiger's head and another image depicting an ocean filled with trash. Through this artwork, I aim to convey a powerful message regarding Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources.

3. Mock Ups

Attempt 1

Figure 4.1 Elements- Week 8 (26/5/2023)

I looked for different pictures of elements based on my sketch and my idea.

Figure 4.2 Masking Progress - Week 8 (26/5/2023)

For each animal, I adjusted the hue/saturation to create a more subdued color palette, simulating their presence in the ocean. Additionally, I added highlights to the top of the tiger and shark to mimic the sunlight shining upon them from above the sea's surface. The title was designed with a gradient effect to ensure it blends harmoniously without overpowering the composition. Furthermore, I incorporated oxygen bubbles at the mouth of the tiger to depict its struggle and convey the notion of drowning.

Figure 4.3 First Poster Attempt - Week 8 (26/5/2023)

Concept
In my artwork titled "Desperate Depths: A Cry for Life Below Water," I have chosen to focus on Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water. The artwork serves as a poignant visual representation of the urgent need to address ocean pollution and its detrimental effects on marine life.

The central image in the poster features a tiger struggling to escape from a shark made entirely out of discarded trash. This visual metaphor highlights the vulnerability of marine species and the devastating impact of pollution on their survival. By depicting the tiger, a powerful and majestic creature, caught in the grip of pollution, I aim to evoke a sense of empathy and urgency in viewers.

Surrounding the struggling tiger and the trash shark are remnants of marine life and an abundance of garbage. This composition emphasizes the contrast between the natural beauty of marine ecosystems and the destructive presence of human-induced pollution. The trash sinking beneath the seabed symbolizes the long-lasting consequences of pollution on our oceans, urging viewers to recognize the gravity of the situation. My artwork aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and sustainably managing our oceans. It serves as a call to action, urging individuals to take responsibility for their actions and make conscious choices that support the health and well-being of marine ecosystems.

Attempt 2

Figure 4.4 Elements - Week 8 (27/5/2023)

Figure 4.5 Masking Progress - Week 8 (27/5/2023)

I began by carefully removing the background around the tiger's fur, paying close attention to the small and delicate details.

Figure 4.6 Layers - Week 8 (27/5/2023)

I applied the double exposure technique I have learned. I carefully unmasked the center of the tiger's face to ensure its clarity and distinguishability as a tiger. Additionally, I incorporated a gradient effect into the title, allowing it to gradually fade away. Furthermore, I positioned the word "sea" behind the tiger, creating a layered and visually engaging composition.

Figure 4.7 Before & After Hue/Saturation  - Week 8 (27/5/2023)

I applied hue/saturation adjustments to ensure better blending of the tiger's image with the sea picture.

Figure 4.8 Second Poster Attempt - Week 8 (27/5/2023)

Concept
My artwork, 'Plastic Sea: Rescuing Life Below from Pollution's Grip,' revolves around the theme of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water and aims to convey a powerful message about the urgent issue of ocean pollution. Through the technique of double exposure, I have created a visual narrative that encapsulates the essence of my message.

In the first exposure, I chose to feature the captivating image of a tiger's head. Tigers represent the strength and beauty of nature, symbolizing the resilience and vitality of our planet. By incorporating this majestic creature, I wanted to evoke a sense of awe and admiration for the wonders of the earth. In the second exposure, I reveal an ocean scene overwhelmed by an abundance of trash. This stark depiction serves as a powerful reminder of the detrimental impact of pollution on marine ecosystems. By showcasing the extent of the problem, I aim to create a sense of urgency and raise awareness about the need for immediate action.

Through this double exposure technique, I wanted to juxtapose the beauty and strength of nature with the harsh reality of ocean pollution. The stark contrast between the majestic tiger and the polluted ocean serves as a call to action, urging viewers to recognize their role in protecting and preserving marine life. I hope that my artwork resonates with viewers and inspires them to take responsibility for their actions. By portraying the consequences of pollution, I want to ignite a sense of empathy and encourage individuals to support initiatives that promote a sustainable and thriving marine environment for future generations.

REFLECTIONS

Experience
Engaging in the double exposure exercise was not only educational but also an incredibly enjoyable experience. It allowed me to explore and master various techniques that I could then incorporate into the second exercises. The newfound skills and knowledge I acquired through this process have opened up a world of possibilities for creating diverse and captivating artwork. For Project 2B, I was excited to start because of the competition. It also forced me to create something and think about my concept. I believe the poster could serve as a reminder to love our environment and protect marine life. I am also happy with how the poster turned out, especially the first one. I think it looks better than I envisioned. Overall, this project has been a valuable learning experience, both in terms of technical skills and personal growth. It has reminded me of the power of art to inspire change and provoke emotions.

Observation
During the process of creating double exposures, I observed that attention to detail and patience are crucial. Achieving a seamless outline of the subject requires careful precision and a keen eye for detail.

Findings
Through this project, I have realized that there are still many things for me to learn, such as creating more realistic and seamless combinations of different elements. Additionally, I have discovered that sketching before starting in Photoshop is a good way to begin. During the sketching process, I don't strive for perfection; instead, I focus on being creative and jotting down whatever comes to mind.
