ASSIGNMENT 2: CONCEPT & NARRATIVE DEVELOPMENT

Week 4 - Storyline & Mood Board

In order to have something ready for the feedback session, Xiao Hui and I discussed creating a storyline and a mood board to present to the lecturer, showing the direction we were heading.

For the mood board, I gathered some images to support Xiao Hui’s story, and I also made a sticky note outlining the overall art style for the lecturer to reference.

As a backup plan, I wrote a short storyline. My idea shows the journey of human connection through light and movement. It begins in darkness, where soft pulses of light appear, symbolizing the first spark of connection. These pulses grow into flowing waves of emotion, shifting colors to reflect different energies. The climax is a vibrant, synchronized display of collective resonance, representing unity. Gradually, the waves slow, fading into gentle echoes of past interactions. In the end, the cycle seamlessly loops, showing that human connection is continuous and ever-flowing.

Week 5 - Development & Finalize

So this week, I was redoing our storyline because the lecturer wants something that could happen in the future something not so common in our daily lives. This week, I changed my story and drew some sketches to visualize my idea.

After our feedback session, our lecturer advised us to combine our storylines. So, each of us wrote down ideas on how we could merge our stories. My idea is to show a future where people communicate through emotions and energy instead of words. The story follows a protagonist waking up in a strange place where symbols turn into a data grid. They meet people using brain devices to share emotions as glowing energy. As they explore, floating dust forms symbols of memories and feelings. In a hospital, a father’s last thoughts appear as glowing words, leaving a mark on his child. The story ends in a futuristic city where people’s emotions are shown as glowing lights, proving that true communication goes beyond words.

Once we finalized the story, we reviewed it to see what could be added to make it more complete.

Sketches

Then, we sent it to our lecturer for approval. After getting approval, I was responsible for sketching out the seven scenes of the storyboard, while Xiao Hui helped write the annotations. So while I was sketching, they started working on the presentation slides. After I finished, I work on the mood board together with my team members and put all the images inside the slides.

FEEDBACK

Week  5:

The lecturer suggested that we should combine our ideas, combining Xinran concept of the brain ring, my storyboard drawing style, the fragmented person theme, and Xiaohui’s idea of floating images and semi-transparent visuals. He also advised us not to make the story too abstract, as it might be difficult for the audience to understand. While he mentioned that my storyboard was fine, he pointed out that the story itself was too abstract. He encouraged us to create a more emotionally engaging and touching narrative, one that resonates with the audience on a deeper level. The mood board is almost there, but we need to find images that are more closely related to the storyline.

Week 4:

Mr. Zeon said our story wasn’t very interesting because it focused too much on how people communicate today, like using colors, shapes, and body gestures. He thought this might not catch the audience’s attention. He suggested we make the story more futuristic by exploring advanced ways people might communicate in the future. For example, we could look at AR (Augmented Reality) or VR (Virtual Reality), where people don’t need to meet in person to talk.

REFLECTION

Throughout this project, I realized that creating a well-rounded storyline requires multiple rounds of refinement and adjustments. It took a lot of time and effort to polish the narrative, ensuring that every scene flowed smoothly and conveyed the intended emotions. I'm grateful that my team members and I could openly discuss our ideas, inspiring one another in the process. Collaborating allowed us to explore different perspectives and refine our concepts, making the story stronger and more well thought. Drawing the storyboard was especially challenging for me as it took almost an hour to complete just one frame. However, I now understand the importance of storyboarding as a crucial tool for visualizing and communicating our ideas to the audience. Despite the time and effort involved, it plays a vital role in bringing our vision to life and ensuring that our story is effectively conveyed. Overall, this task has been both demanding and fast-paced, as we had less than two weeks to complete it. The tight deadline pushed us to work efficiently while maintaining quality.
