INSTRCTIONS
ASSIGNMENT 1: CONCEPT AND IDEATION: PROJECT PROPOSAL
Week 1 - Mind Map & Case Study
During the first week, we formed a group of four and began discussing the tasks we needed to complete. To start off, I created a Miro board for our brainstorming and discussions.
I started my mind map with the word pulse, then gradually expanded it. I came up with a unique idea—Earth's breathing—which I found intriguing. From there, I explored the concept further and arrived at the theme of animal migration, which I felt was closely related to the idea of "pulse".

Each of us also conducted case study analyses to gather inspiration and ideas for our project.
|
For my case study, I chose TeamLab Botanical Garden Osaka because its interactive lighting and spatial design interact with the audience. The ovoids change color when touched or moved by visitors, introducing an interactive element. I also had the opportunity to visit the exhibition myself, which allowed me to experience firsthand how the immersive environment reacts to human interaction. This personal experience gave me valuable insights into how light, movement, and interactivity can create a dynamic and engaging atmosphere. We might add a similar concept into our project to enhance engagement and interactivity.

After the feedback session, the lecturer mentioned that many other groups also had the "animal" theme. So, we decided to brainstorm a new idea and came up with the theme of social interaction and networking. Then, we created a new mind map focusing solely on social interaction.

Then, I came up with two design concepts to bring our idea into practice: Conversational Currents and Heartbeat of Connection, both of which relate to social interaction.

Then I redo my case study to find something more suitable for our topic.

I also added a section on the application of insights and the concept proposal, which was supposed to align with our topics.

Week 3 - Amendments and Refinement of Proposal
However, the lecturer said the application should align more with what we learned in our case study and how it applies to our project, so I redid it. I also added a few points to my case study explaining why the artist chose to create this installation and the reasoning behind their motif.
After we have completed all the refinements and amendments, XiaoHui will send it to the lecturer for approval. Once approved, we start working on our presentation slides.

FEEDBACK
Week 3:
Your mind map should be specific to the topic of the sticky note and clearly related to your theme. The current mind map is too general and not directly connected to the theme. For the case study, you should explain why the artist created this project. You also need to clearly define your topics because your case study discusses a different subject than what’s on the sticky note. Design inspiration should focus on what you learned from the case study and how it can be applied to your project.
Week 2:
- There are too many groups focusing on the "animal" theme.
- The case study should be relevant to the chosen topic, focusing on what you have learned and extracting ideas that can help in the project.
REFLECTION
I took this subject as a free elective without knowing what to expect. It turned out to be about lighting and immersive design in a space, focusing on storytelling and the message we want to convey to the audience. This is a group project, and initially, I wasn’t too excited about working in a team because I usually prefer doing everything myself. However, it turned out to be a fun experience. Listening to everyone’s ideas helped broaden my perspective, and I really appreciated that my friend took this module with me. She handled the communication, which made things easier for me. I initially started with an idea related to animals, but we realized that other teams had similar concepts. So, we decided to change our approach to something more unique, focusing on social interaction. In the end, we came up with the idea of using non-verbal communication or a language-free way of conveying messages.
