Final Project : Thematic Matte Painting (VFX)

INSTRCTIONS

Instructions
Thematic and realistic. Students will demonstrate technical capability to analyze, composite and communicate set uniqueness by blending 3D geometry and 2D painting to a raw video footage together with special effects. Students need to come up with 3 different location based on the theme and genre selected. Students must also showcase the breakdowns of how this project is undertaken. * Note that your matte should seamlessly blend and showcase a believable set. You are to use Unreal or Unity to make the world build and compose it via After Effects.

Submission:
  • Compiled technical doc .pdf (*moodboard, styleguide, storyboard, technical processes as posted in their e-portfolio).
  • Final output will include a 15 – 30 sec video (*.mp4, h2.64, 16:9 - 1440 X 1080, 25 fps, ACC, 48kHz, uploaded to youtube channel).

FINAL PROJECT : THEMEATIC MATTE PAINTING (VFX)

Halfway through Project 2, I began working on the camera video composition to align the animation with my 3D buildings. My goal was to make the process more time-efficient by combining both tasks. Initially, I attempted the composition without rendering to test the camera movements and overall flow.

After switching to Plan B, as mentioned earlier, I had to redo my camera setup because I started fresh with a new file.  I also added some animated movements, such as making the fan spin. Once I rendered the animation, I realized the sky still didn’t meet my expectations. However, replacing the sky frame by frame across hundreds of images felt too tedious, so I decided to move on and focus on video editing for now.

The animation was rendered as individual images, frame by frame. I then used Adobe Premiere Pro to assemble these images in the correct sequence and set the frame rate to 24 frames per second, to give a smoother animation.

During the editing process, I noticed some mistakes. In certain scenes, the camera moved too quickly, making the pacing feel off. To fix this, I broke the clips into smaller segments and adjusted the speed to achieve the desired flow.

To enhance the visual quality, I applied color correction directly in Premiere Pro using techniques I had learned from video production.  Despite the challenges, I managed to make the animation more presentable. The experience of working with both 3D animation and video editing helped me learn how to adapt and refine my work efficiently under time constraints.

I added a jet sound effect and background music to my video in Premiere Pro.

REFLECTION

Throughout this module, I feel like I neglected it compared to my other commitments. Most of my effort was focused on my Game Art and Environment module, which left me rushing to complete my work for this project by the due date. This lack of balance in prioritizing my tasks negatively impacted the quality of my work and added unnecessary stress.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was poor time management. I struggled to balance multiple modules, and as a result, I often left tasks for this module until the last minute. This approach didn’t allow me to explore the full potential of my ideas or refine them as much as I would have liked.

Another issue was my lack of familiarity with some of the technical tools required for this project. I spent a lot of time troubleshooting problems in Blender, which could have been avoided if I had allocated more time earlier in the process to learning and experimenting with the software. Instead, I found myself rushing to learn as I worked, which slowed me down significantly.

Despite these difficulties, this experience has taught me valuable lessons about managing workloads, setting priorities, and staying consistent throughout a project. I’ve also realized the importance of seeking help earlier when I encounter technical or creative challenges, rather than trying to resolve everything on my own. While I managed to finish the project, the rushed process taught me a valuable lesson about staying organized and maintaining a consistent effort across all my responsibilities.
