INSTRCTIONS

You are to continue developing your vehicle design from project 1. Pick one of your vehicle and props concept to be extended with design application that communicates well and appeal to the target audiences. Here you have to showcase your development process. Process includes:
  • Thumbnails  (Vehicle and Props Breakdowns)
  • Value studies
  • Color studies
  • Textures
Output 16:9 1920+ Illustration compiled in pdf format.

NOTE: You are allowed to use AI generated images only for references purpose and to be cited. This can be included within your mood board creation and ideation process. Progress on each developments should be recorded and raw files are to be kept as proof of original work. Any misuse of AI generated images as final submission will not be accepted and will be considered plagiarism.

PROJECT 2 : PRODUCTION

Project 2 was a continuation of Project 1. It involved developing the interior and the props of the vehicle.

I designed a simple interior for my aircraft. The first layer features a control center with many high-tech screens to operate the aircraft. I referenced the control centers from 'Jurassic World' and also took some inspiration from Marvel.

From my sketch, you can see the large windows that allow military soldiers and pilots to monitor the outside. The room also contains many panels and screens for controlling the aircraft and its weapons. These screens are high-tech, similar to those seen in the movie.

The second layer is designed for passengers. I sketched out some seats with a sci-fi design, and based on the picture, it can accommodate 18 people.

Week 9 - Props Design

For the props design, I want to create a bazooka that can be placed inside an air vehicle. I want to connect an electric prod to it so that it can shock dinosaurs without killing them. I envision something large that can be carried on the user's shoulder, with a handle to hold it.

For the bazooka, I created a two-barrel gun to increase efficiency. It takes time to fire one, so the other can be fired while the first is reloading.

As Jurassic World is set in the near future, I don't want to create something too extravagant. I have drawn a tablet with a hologram screen and a small drone that can be easily deployed like a fly to monitor the surroundings and track down dinosaurs. The tablet displays the statistics and vital signs of the dinosaurs.

I drew a sketch of the tablet with a tiny drone, but when I applied colors, it didn't reflect what I wanted. The hologram screen was hard for me to color, and it doesn't look like a hologram.

Week 10 - Development & Refining

I continued to develop the interior of the passenger seats. I designed the interior with high-tech screens displaying information about the Earth and the dinosaurs. I also added some tech screens on the floor with the Jurassic World logo. Additionally, I drew some panels on the ceiling, resembling screens showing the sky, to prevent it from looking very claustrophobic. I also added some long strip light panels to give it a contemporary and futuristic look. The seats are big and solid to ensure the safety of the passengers, and they also have seatbelts.

With the feedback from Mr. Kannan, I refined the tablet with a bigger compartment for the drone to deploy and store in. I also made the tablet bulkier and bigger to fit the Jurassic World theme. I added a blue color effect to make the screen look like a hologram and included some noise effect to enhance the hologram appearance. I added two metal handles on the sides to make the tablet easier to hold and maneuver, enhancing its practicality in field operations.

I refined the gun weapon by reducing the intensity of the lines. I thinned the lines and added a different material on top of the gun to make it look more like a weapon. I also added some lights similar to those on the tablet to maintain consistency and make it look like they can pair together.

Week 11 - Refining & 3D

I added some rubber and black material to refine the design. The rubber handle also makes it more comfortable to hold and anti-slip. I included a silhouette to show how it can be held.

I shifted the handle of the bazooka forward a bit to create space for the shoulder rest. I also drew a silhouette to show how it can be used.

To save time, I went straight to creating the 3D model for the interior. Since I already had the color sketch of the design, I moved on to 3ds Max. I reduced the number of seats because, after examining the exterior, the body didn't have ample space. I also made some minor tweaks according to Mr. Kannan's feedback, including adding some half partitions in a repetitive form. I retained some of the original designs, like the blue screens and the design of the seats.

FEEDBACK

Week 11:
Shift the handle to adjust how it is held. Place a person to see how the character fits into the environment. Fix the flooring, adjust the seat, and correct the perspective. Use a rubber material and cover on top to give it some contrast.

Week 10:
Jurassic World is very heavy like military, so the tablet should have bulkier sides with more metal to make it heavier. You can have a compartment to store the drone, then that would be more functional. The gun looks like a spaceship and is too complicated; you could cover it with another material. You can also reduce the lines. The second interior design is more interesting. You could try applying colors.

REFLECTION

Experience
This project had the shortest deadline, and even though Mr. Kannan extended the due date, I still did my best to design the props for the theme. Working on props was enjoyable for me because they are smaller in size and less overwhelming compared to designing interiors. I attempted to color the props with realistic painting techniques but felt like something was still missing. It might have been beneficial to take a digital matte painting course beforehand to enhance my skills. I don’t particularly enjoy coloring interiors because it is time-consuming and can easily throw off my perspective. Instead, I prefer using 3Ds Max, as I am more familiar with it. By rendering the designs directly in 3Ds Max, I can avoid the coloring process altogether, which works better for me.

Observation
Throughout this project, I observed that functionality is more important than design. Although aesthetics are important, ergonomics and functionality are more crucial. For example, consider the bazooka handle in our design. Initially, the handle was positioned too far back, which made it difficult to carry and use effectively. This placement affected the overall usability and comfort of the product. By shifting the handle slightly forward, which were able to significantly improve its ergonomics, allowing it to be carried on the shoulder comfortably and used properly.

Findings
I found that drawing perspectives can be a bit challenging and time-consuming. Getting the angles and proportions right is crucial but difficult, and this often threw off my overall design process. As a result, I leaned more towards using 3Ds Max for its precision and efficiency in rendering accurate perspectives.
