REFLECTION

Experience
Throughout the process of researching and writing my dissertation on "Detroit: Become Human," I have gained a profound understanding of the complex interplay between artificial intelligence, ethics, and human society. This exploration has not only deepened my appreciation for the narrative intricacies of the game but also highlighted several critical insights about the broader implications of AI in our world. One of the most significant lessons I learned is the importance of narrative in exploring ethical dilemmas. "Detroit: Become Human" utilizes its interactive storytelling to immerse players in scenarios that challenge their moral and ethical beliefs. This approach proved to be a powerful tool for examining the consequences of AI integration into society. By stepping into the shoes of the game's characters, players are compelled to confront questions about consciousness, free will, and what it means to be human. This immersive experience reinforces the idea that narratives can be instrumental in fostering empathy and understanding complex ethical issues.

Observation
I observed that the game's emphasis on choice and consequence mirrors the complexity of real-world ethical decision-making. The branching narrative structure, where players' decisions directly influence the storyline, highlights the weight of ethical choices. This interactive element not only enhances player engagement but also serves as a powerful tool for examining ethical principles and their application in various contexts. From this, I learned the significance of incorporating choice and consequence in interactive media to explore ethical dilemmas.

Findings
Through this dissertation, I found that "Detroit: Become Human" underscores the importance of ethical design in AI development. The game illustrates the consequences of designing AI without considering ethical implications, as well as the benefits of incorporating ethical frameworks into AI systems. From this, I learned that developers and policymakers must prioritize ethical considerations in AI development to ensure these technologies align with human values and promote the well-being of all members of society.

FEEDBACK

Week 14:
For the discussion image, there's no need to include every respondent; just place the specific image of the highlighted response. Leave a gap between the RQs and Ros.

Week 12:
  • Darken the body text slightly to improve readability.
  • Caption all images for better context and understanding.
  • Correct any grammatical errors to enhance readability and professionalism.

Week 11:
  • The current image in section 1.2 is not very interesting. Consider choosing a more engaging image.
  • Avoid blocking images. Allow readers to see the images clearly without obstructions.
  • Remove or reduce the intensity of numbering to maintain focus on the title.
  • The cover needs improvement.
  • Replace the current logo with the Taylor University Design School logo.
  • Include significant images or scenes that capture interest.
  • Ensure the white patch does not block the image.
  • Ensure font size is consistent throughout the document.

Week 10:

  •  Abstract: Try to condense the abstract by focusing on the key research problem, objectives, methods, findings, and conclusions. Avoid including specific details that can be elaborated on in the main body of the dissertation.
  • Literature Review: It would be a good idea to expand the literature review to include more recent studies on emotional engagement with AI characters in video games. This would help to contextualize your research within the current state of the field. Additionally, try to critically evaluate the existing literature and identify specific gaps that your study aims to address.
  • Research Methodology: While the mixed-methods approach is commendable, you could provide more details on the sampling method used for the survey and the criteria for selecting YouTubers for gameplay observation. This would strengthen the validity and generalizability of your findings.
  • Discussion: You may want to delve deeper into the implications of your findings for the design of emotionally engaging AI characters. Discuss the potential benefits and limitations of emotional engagement, and consider addressing ethical considerations, such as the potential for manipulation or the impact on player well-being.
  • Conclusion: Try to strengthen the conclusion by highlighting the key takeaways from your research and providing more specific recommendations for game developers and AI designers. Discuss the potential impact of your findings on the future of AI character development in video games.
  • Project Recommendation/Future Research: You may want to expand this section to include more concrete and actionable recommendations for designing emotionally engaging AI characters. Additionally, suggest potential avenues for future research, such as exploring the long-term effects of emotional engagement with AI characters or investigating the impact of different emotional expressions on player responses.
  • Reference List: Ensure that all sources are formatted correctly according to APA guidelines. Double-check for any missing or incomplete citations.


Week 5:

The citation of the article should move to the reference. And every image should have an explanation. Therefore, the conceptual framework should have one paragraph to explain it. Every image should have captions, and you might want to make the background of the research framework white. Organize the findings in a better flow. Put the raw findings in appendixes.
