1. Aims & Approach
First of all, I would like to start my research by reviewing the project requirements. My project aims to utilize art as a means of promoting sustainable development and achieving the 12 chosen SDG goals, while aligning them with Maybank TIGER core values. I conducted research and created a mind map based on my findings.

Figure 1.1.2 12 SDG Goals - Week 4 (30/4/2023) I have chose my SDG Goals either Goal 8 (Decent Work & Economic Growth) or Goal 4 (QUality Education), therefore I did deeper research. |
Figure 1.1.3 Decent Work & Economic Growth |
The figure above provides a global perspective, but the Malaysian government has taken multiple ways to promote economic growth and provide access to decent work opportunities for its people. These including implementing programs and policies to enhance the skills and education of the workforce by promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, investing in infrastructure, establishing minimum wage policy and providing social protection systems to ensure financial assistance for workers.
Linking this back to Maybank, there goal from economical views are:
1. Mobilising RM50 billion in Sustainable Finance by 2025
Over RM13.6 billion in sustainable finance has been mobilised by the Group in 2021.

2. Case Study / Visual Research
The example illustration above showcases the theme of Quality Education, which is one of the SDGs. Despite being a single framed illustration, it beautifully represents the progression of life and different perspectives of individuals. The poster starts with the early stage, where all children have access to free education. It then moves on to the future, where well-educated students progress and become successful. The poster also highlights the importance of well-trained and motivated teachers, and government funding in the form of scholarships to help those in need. The poster emphasizes the idea of equal opportunities for all, without discrimination. I like the small design details such as the flyers on the wall stating "The 17 Goals" and hands reaching into the windows to shows help from outside.
Figure 1.2.2 Case Study 2 |
This poster is appealing to me as it uses different shades of blue and white to create an ocean-themed poster. The poster aims to create awareness about pollution and its impact on the ocean. It provides informative facts and charts that highlight the severity of the issue, such as the amount of marine creatures die each year from plastic entanglement. The bottom of the poster provides a solution that individuals can take to reduce pollution and help protect the ocean. Overall, this illustration is an effective way to raise awareness about a critical environmental issue and encourage people to take action to make a positive impact.
This is a magazine cover from Science Magazine's "Path of Evidence" by Davide Bonazzi. I love the idea that the people are depicted as small and the scientist is holding a torch, symbolizing the search for evidence and knowledge amidst the research papers.
The small people in the background represent the public and those who benefit from the findings of scientific research. This image inspires me to create a poster with a deeper meaning, incorporating many small details.
Figure 1.2.4 Case Study 4 |
I love the style of illustrations where everything is hand-drawn in a simple way that's easy for everyone to read and understand. I hope to achieve a similar style in my poster.
I found some illustrations that I think could inspire my poster on the topic of quality education. From my perspective, this image could represent how good education can propel us towards a better future, opening up various paths and opportunities for us. It could also symbolize how education can create a brighter future for individuals and society as a whole.

Figure 1.3 Mood board - Week 4 (30/4/2023) |
I've created a mood board to show my style of illustration, my inspirations, the message I want to convey, and a tentative color scheme. I haven't finalized my color scheme yet because I haven't started sketching. The colors I choose will depend on the content of my illustrations.

PROJECT 2: MYTIGER VALUES ART COMPETITION
1. Sketches
Attempt 1
![]() |
Figure 2.1.1 Sketch Development - Week 5 (9/5/2023) |
As I began brainstorming and creating rough sketches, I made the decision to focus on the theme of Quality Education. I found that I could envision the desired drawing more clearly within this context. I started by creating very rough sketches as initial drafts and then proceeded to refine the details. Gradually, these rough sketches evolved into a more detailed outline for my final sketch.
The drawing begins with an entrance that bears the word "education," symbolizing that education is accessible to all. In the scene, a boy holds a paper labeled "scholarship," representing opportunities for educational advancement. Adjacent to the entrance, there are boats, with people sailing them. These boats are crafted from books, signifying the pursuit of knowledge and the ability to choose individual paths of interest. Each boat is associated with a different book, depicting various subjects such as mathematics, zoology, and more, highlighting the diversity of educational options available.
On the right side of the drawing, people surround a central book that appears to burst with flying books. Dolphins are included in the imagery to represent the transformative nature of learning, symbolizing intelligence and the joy of exploration. In the background, the mountain scenery features a galaxy-filled sky, signifying the realm of astronomy and inspiring a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Figure 2.1.2 Color Sketch - Week 6 (15/5/2023) |
I created all my sketches using Procreate. Initially, I colored the sketch using natural colors inspired by a scenic setting. However, I felt that the colors were slightly off and lacked the desired saturation. Therefore, I made the decision to embark on a second attempt to refine the coloring.
Attempt 2

Figure 2.1.3 Sketch Attempt 2 - Week 7 (17/5/2023) |
For my second attempt, I incorporated some of the ideas from my initial sketch to make the design more expressive. I focused on enhancing the visual impact by making notable changes to the elements. Firstly, I exaggerated the book on the right side, enlarging it and incorporating clouds and plantations to create a dreamy and whimsical atmosphere. Additionally, I placed a tiger on top of the book to align with the MyTIGER competition, incorporating their mascot into the composition. To further emphasize the theme, I replaced the human figures with tigers.
In terms of the boat, I opted for a larger tiger boat instead of a smaller one, which allowed me to add more intricate details. I surrounded the tiger on the boat with multiple books. Regarding the left side of the design, I made a significant change by transforming the large book with holes in the middle into "study/learning" rooms. This modification adds variety to the composition and highlights the importance of different learning environments and spaces.
For the second sketch, I didn't have the opportunity to create a color version due to time constraints. However, despite this limitation, I was determined to make the most of the sketching phase and focus on capturing the essence of my ideas.
2. Digitalization Progress
I placed my sketch underneath the outline layer to serve as a guideline. I use pen tool and pencil tool to draw all the outlines. However, during the process, I noticed that some of the lines did not completely close the gaps as intended.

After completing the outline, I merged all the lines to close the gaps, allowing me to utilize the paint bucket tool effectively.

Figure 2.2.3 Colored Poster in Illustrator - Week 8 (21/5/2023) |
It took me several days to complete the coloring of my poster, particularly due to the numerous intricate details on the boat and the books.

Figure 3.1 Final MyTIGER Poster (Quality Education) - Week 8 (26/5/2023) |
Based on the lecturer's feedback, I made the adjustment of adding the title in a perspective view to the composition. Title with "The Journey To Empowerment : Exploring Quality Education."
Concept
The SDG of my poster is Quality Education. The concept of the poster aims to convey the idea that education has the power to open up new possibilities and lead us to a different world. It emphasizes that through education, we can develop critical thinking skills, expand our knowledge, and enhance our imagination and way of thinking.
The poster depicts a scenic setting with a river and a boat carrying a tiger, surrounded by books. On the left side of the poster, there are several rooms symbolizing different learning spaces. It includes the phrases "free for all" and "quality education," representing our goal of achieving accessible primary and secondary education for everyone.
The right side of the poster showcases an open book bursting with additional books, dolphins, and a tiger. This imagery conveys the notion that learning has a transformative effect, allowing us to explore new horizons and unlock our potential. The presence of dolphins signifies intelligence and the joy of learning, while the tiger symbolizes strength and resilience in pursuing education.
Overall, the poster aims to highlight the importance of quality education as a means to empower individuals and promote positive change. It emphasizes the transformative impact of education on critical thinking, knowledge acquisition, imagination, and personal growth. Through the visual elements and messages presented, the poster seeks to inspire viewers to value and support accessible and high-quality education for all.
FEEDBACKS
Week 8: It's quite nice. I do wish you could integrate the message as well, like an isometric illustration, using this style but without 3D lighting.
REFLECTIONS
Experience
Through this poster design, I feel that it is more challenging compared to the last project because I have a lot of ideas in my mind, but I lack the skills and ability to draw them out. Consequently, I am spending a significant amount of time working on it. I made my initial rough sketch, and I admit that it appeared messy and unattractive, but I understood the importance of trusting the process. After completing the first colored sketch, I realized it wasn't strong enough to convey what I had envisioned. As a result, I proceeded to create a second sketch, and I feel much better about my artwork now.
Observation
I observed that completing the first colored sketch was a milestone for me. Although I initially felt it fell short of capturing the essence of what I wanted to convey, it served as a foundation for further exploration. I took the opportunity to reflect on its strengths and weaknesses and gather feedback from others. Armed with this knowledge, I embarked on my second sketch, determined to push the boundaries and create a more impactful and representative piece.
As I progressed with my second sketch, I witnessed a remarkable transformation. I began to feel a sense of satisfaction and pride in my artwork. It was as if I had tapped into a well of creativity and unleashed a side of myself I never knew existed. The more I invested in the process, the more confident I became in my abilities.
Findings
Through this poster design project, I have discovered that my abilities surpass my initial expectations. I never realized that I had the potential to create such decent artwork. Initially, I doubted my skills and doubted whether I would be able to bring my ideas to life. However, as I delved into the process and dedicated my time and effort, I started to realize my own capabilities.
